PETER THWAITES
is an artist of growing
reputation, with his natural history portfolio painted mainly
in watercolours.
THIS WEBSITE features the fungi collection which continues
to grow with each autumn season. He works only from live mushroom specimens
which are usually painted life size. With his eye and skill to depict
detail, these paintings bring the beauty and amazing sculpture of
the mushroom world to life. |
During his early years in Cornwall, Peter used the
medium of painting and drawing to record the natural world around him. His
paintings of mushrooms and toadstools were exhibited at the Royal
Institution in Truro. He
has exhibited at the Royal Watercolour Society's C21 exhibition
at the Bankside Gallery in London and at the International ArtExpo
in Atlanta, Georgia.
In 2005 he was commissioned by the British
Mycological Society to illustrate their new Pocket Guide
to Common Fungi and this was followed by a commission for a full-size poster of wild mushrooms, in 2008. Copies of both are available from

In 2014 Peter was asked by a Professor at Aberdeen University to create artistic impressions from microscopic views of three pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans). This prestigious commission, from the Medical Mycology and Fungal Immunology Consortium was to promote medical mycology research and increase public understanding of the clinical importance of fungal infections. The other aims of the Consortium, led by the Aberdeen Fungal Group at the University of Aberdeen and funded by a Wellcome Trust Strategic Award, are to promote cross disciplinary research across the UK, to build capacity in the medical mycology sector and to train a new generation of scientists from countries of low- and middle- income with high endemic burdens of fungal disease.
